Kentucky Derby Insights:
In Florida:
Dornoch has won the needed races but has also not been tested because of scratches on race day- the next race will be the key to his success or otherwise.
Sedona broke her maiden over this past weekend and the 2 million dollar price tag states their intentions. A young horse with lots of potential to improve.
Meanwhile Hades won the Holly Bill defeating Pletcher’s Fierceness. Whether that was the BC curse or other horses have caught up with the reigning champion remains to be seen. Also, Pletcher has Locked in the mix with an opportunity to improve.
IN New York:
Uncle Heavy trained by Butch Reid and ridden by Mychal Sanchez is my sentimental play. Again need to see more before I commit to this horse.
Deterministic won in the slop for Clement - not certain what to make of the race
El Grande O trainer Linda Rice has dominated in NY, but this is another gam call together.
In Kentucky and Oaklawn:
Sierra Leone is definitely in the right path but Chad is better on the green than the brown and I’m not committed until we see another race.
Brad Cox’s Timberlake seems like his best horse and Asmussen‘s Track Phantom will have their say in this first leg, but both have not crossed the line first in the Derby. Pay attention to trainer Kenny McPeek’s Mystic Dan, I would love to see him win the Derby.
The Baffert ban has decimated the possible West Coast entries. We may not see a horse from the West Coast or at least not a playable one.
Overall:
Sierre Leone has run to the 2.3 million dollar price, but I am still not convinced. We will have a clearer picture after the Florida Derby. We have seen some horses run well on the wet tracks, but I want to see who continues to move forward.
